about

The “NYC Animal” single and video releases 2-3-23 from Strange Majik. Featuring a mixed media album cover painted by ambidextrous artist phenom Storm Ritter and photographed in 35mm by nightlife bard Matt Weinberger, this is a whole new breed of Majik.

New York nightlife has always been home to the fashionista and the iconoclast. It has always been a common thread in the music of David Pattillo aka Strange Majik. He has shared his own slice of big apple talent for eight years at Tribeca’s Belle Reve entertaining the likes of Kim and Kanye, Jakob Dylan, and many celebs with his remarkable five-piece band. The Deli Magazine dubbed him a blues rock cult hero of the scene.

But in the summer of 2022 he played a party at a Lower East Side hotspot that changed everything. Half clad indie Gen Z’s bopped to Y2K rock bangers and his own songs while OG nightlife image maven Cobrasnake captured it all. In this grungy rock and roll throwback of indie sleaze, NYC Animal was conceived.

Armed with this new cultural muse, Pattillo stole away to his underground LES lair and began writing and producing. Inspired by the disco grooves of Bowie, the lyrical insouciance of Iggy Pop, the wit of LCD Soundsystem, and the urban reportage of Lou Reed, Pattillo ventured out of the comfort zone of his bluesy jams to a whole new indie rock sound. The record unfolds like a double helix from the opening Hendrix E7#9 chord to derma-fused soul, dreamy soundscapes, laconic monologues, and grunge. The title track and video will release 2-3-23 and the 10 song album follows March 24.

lyrics

She was a New York City Animal
She was a purveyor of rock n roll
She was a vision in her stilettos
Silhouettin' like a winding road

Come on mamma what you got on me
Come on down to the land of the free
I see you walking and I'm coming behind
Want you to rock me in your animal hide
Ooooh yeah

He was a nightlife impresario
We know you boned him on the down low
Spinning records at the rock show
Sounding good on the audio

And you were dancing like a scene queen
Shaking your pony to the Libertines
Flashes poppin' fashion magazines
Looking legal but you're only 17

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ooooowww

The afterparty was a real blast
Black cherry seltzer shots were very fast
Rockin Deceptacon and Outkast
Some kind of fashion iconoclast

Dollar pizza and a shoot on the street
You never know who you're gonna meet
Spread on the pavement with your Prada bag
Don't show your Momma just remove the tag
Sweet

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ooooowww

She was a New York City Animal
She was a purveyor of rock n roll
She was a vision in her stilettos
Silhouettin' like a winding road

Come on mamma what you got on me
Come on down to the land of the free
I see you walking and I'm coming behind
Want you to rock me in your animal hide
Ooooh yeah

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ooooowww
